Environment Canada maintains a network of radio towers set-up across Canada that in the event of a weather emergency, a signal is sent and received by personal radio units that warn of severe weather warnings. These radios are called weather radios and more specifically weather radio's with specific area messaging encoders.

From Environment Canada:
Weatheradio Canada is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting weather and environmental information 24 hours a day in both official languages directly from Environment Canada's storm prediction centres.

From its inception in 1977, the network has expanded to 180 sites across the country, transmitting continuous weather information on 7 dedicated frequencies on the VHF public service band. Now, fully 92% of Canadians can access a Weatheradio signal, and recent technological advances have made it possible for listeners to program radio receivers to deliver only certain types of warnings for their specific locations.

Every forecast region in Canada has it's own S.A.M.E. code... to find yours and the location of the nearest transmitter site click the link below.

What are these SAME codes?
A unique SAME code (Specific Area Message Encoding) is used to identify each type of weather hazard and a second set of codes identifies specific geographic areas. This allows listeners to pre-program their Weatheradio receivers to alert them of only selected types of events for just the local area.

A WEATHER RADIO SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE A SMOKE DETECTOR... THEY ARE LIFE SAVING DEVICES IF THE POWER IS OUT OR YOU ARE SLEEPING AND UNABLE TO RECEIVE SEVERE WEATHER WARNINGS. EVERY YEAR DOZENS OF PEOPLE DIE IN NORTH AMERICA BECAUSE THEY RECEIVED NO WARNING.
